February 'Boxed Off'
Posted Tuesday 19 Mar 2013 15:10 PM
February started annoyingly with a cancelled job first week at less than 48 hours notice as someone 'had pulled out of the sale'. How you do that at such short notice without paying a financial penalty to the poor vendors is still a source of great mystery to me.
A few of our local solicitors were having a shift around in their offices and we were contracted to undertake a few internal moves to assist them with their plans. Quite a few people on the move this month which is great as it shows that properties are still selling despite what we read. People asking for quotes in readiness for moves towards March and Easter time too. Good sign for Spring and Summer months if people are already asking for quotes this early in the year. Let's hope this is the case as we took delivery of 1750 cartons and other packing materials this month in readiness. Ended the month on a high going to the wedding of two great friends, Paul and Rebecca. . . Congratulations (told you I'd give you a mention on my blog !!)
Good Start to 2013

January is always an un-predictable month in this trade. There are usually a few people who never made completion before Xmas who are moving early in the month or people who decide to start the New Year by sorting out their homes ready for marketing in the coming Spring and so put stuff into storage or decide to get stuff out that is in storage and either use it or get rid of it.
Fortunately we have had quite a good start to the year with a few away trips to Newbury, Bucks, Stroud in Gloucestershire and a customer who had been in stores since last July whilst having a home renovated in Suffolk. This job saw us off for a trip to Framlingham in the snow and ice and -8 degs first thing in the morning having had a few pints and a night in The Crown Hotel ( highly recommended). After a few hours slipping and sliding along their driveway the job was sorted. Some local moves and an office job or two and suddenly it's February !!
New Year Resolution 2013

I have been pretty poor at keeping the blog updated last year so I have decided, due to constraints, that I promise to do a blog at the end of each month instead. . . . . . Promise !!!

Last week was a bit quite with some local jobs and a move to Appleby in Westmoreland and this week Steve has taken a week off. . . . I can't understand why he would want to get away from us and the joys of removals !
Monday we were in beautiful countryside outside Clitheroe packing and collecting a consignement of antiques for Bonham Auctioneers Chester Branch for whom we regularly work around Merseyside,Lancashire and the Fylde Coast area. We were at a fabulous manor house with fantastic views across the countryside to the Pennines, built in the 18thC by a gentleman who apparantly made his fortune shipping wood back from the West Indies. Amongst the items we collected were a very ornate 18th C dutch armoire which had to be totally dismantled to get it out of the room and which unfortunately the assembly instructions were not included together with a Bechstein grand piano.
A couple of jobs out of storage, one which had been in for 5 years and the other 4 and some warehouse work filled the rest of the week.

Having got back from my holiday Steve, who had done a great job running things whilst I was away, couldn't give me the mobile phone back quick enough in order to give his ears and head some much needed rest and I found an entry in the diary which said 'HURRAH DAVE'S BACK'. . . . . Maybe sarcastic. . But I think he meant it !
Monday saw us finish off loading one of the biggest long distance domestic removals we have undertaken in many years. 3500cu ft all which had to be pre-packed and prepared from Salmesbury,Nr Preston down to Great Kingshill in Bucks. The lads had spent 2 days transhipping over 2000 cu ft of it down a 200 metre driveway that we couldn't get the pantechnicon up,most of it in the pouring rain.
With all three vans loaded up we arrived at 1. 30pm on Tuesday afternoon and we were able to get two of the vehicles unloaded before calling it a day and heading of to our digs in High Wycombe and a few much needed pints.
Our clients were absolutely fantastic. They looked after us with home made cake, biscuits and drinks and before we left they made each of us what I would describe as a 'small picnic' for the journey home after a lovely speech praising all our efforts given by them in the hallway just before we left. It was an absolute pleasure to work for them and they were so easy going throughout the whole 7 days it took to complete the job.
Later in the week saw a couple of local moves then off up to Morpeth in Northumberland on Friday to load up and travel back to Southport un-loading Saturday.
Let down by others but still an amazing FEET ? W/C 24th Sept 2012

Whilst still away (sadly. . But not really) The lads relocated the offices of The Institute of Chiropodists and Podiatrists in Southport town centre to their new location on Lord St. Unfortunately we were badly let down by a local plant hire contractor from whom we had booked the use of a Manitou fork lift to relocate a fireproof cabinet to the first floor several weeks before. We had a joiner in to take out the first floor window and when Steve rang the plant hire guy to confirm his arrival time he then informed us that the fork lift was in the garage with the gearbox out since 48 hours ago. . . . When was he going to let us know ?? Obviously not bothered about letting people down. Why is it these people run their businesses with such an attitude to others who are giving them work. I know that if we shaped like this we would be out of business in months. . . Unbelieveable only count on yourself is the lesson. Fortunately our clients were happy to have it located at ground floor level even though we offered to relocate it upstairs at a later date if required. At the end of the day the guys all needed a pedicure ! Wed/Thurs and Friday saw the start of one of the biggest domestic moves we have done for years. . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

Got behind with blogs due to the fact that I allowed myself a holiday with my good lady to celebrate our Silver Wedding Anniversary but fortunately the lads had plenty to do while I was struggling on the beach !!
Pretty routine week with a couple of local moves and a large 4 seater settee over a first floor balcony as it was too large to get out of the lounge. Then it was off to Sunny Bradford. Back end of the week saw the lads emptying hundreds of files and a fireproof safe from the damp basement of a solicitors offices in the town centre. All had to be packed in numerical and alphabetical order and taken to storage. . . . A day of the smell and working in a cramp, cold damp cellar. . . . . If only I could have been with them but No stuck on this beach with this damned ice cold beer in my hand !!. . . :). . . Ahhh just like the good old days Mr Arkwright !!

After a busy last week in August the last 2 weeks have been quieter as all the schools are back and we have been mostly doing a few local moves with two trips to Kendal in between. The Lake District is always more appealing when you go on a warm sunny day.
We are looking at a very busy last two weeks of September and first week to ten days of October. We have also been doing quite a few quotes for people who are talking about moves in late October (half term) and into first week of November so the signs are encouraging despite what appears in the press.
The highlight of the last two weeks was a consignement we packed and shipped for a VIP client who was moving out of his parents home and starting his first full time job in Dusseldorf, Germany. . . His name. . . Paul Gregory (my son) !! Congratulations Paul and we now have a room to rent !!! 🙂

A few postponed and cancelled jobs last two weeks which is always frustrating. . . On then off. . . On. . Then off until next week !!! Always more of this in August than any other month. . . . Holiday season. . .
Last two weeks have pretty much been local moves and a few jobs into storage. A trip to Guilford,Surrey and Birmingham last week. Bit quieter than last few months although as usual the week up to Bank Holiday everyone and their dog wants to move !!!!
Think most people gone on holiday or been too busy watching Team GB to move. . . . . . We didn't get any Gold Medals and neither did Team GB swimming who are a bit better looking than us but can't run up and down stairs as quick !!

Start of the week and Steve and Karl were off to Glasgow. . . . Poor Karl was tired after trying and sleep for 9 hours while Steve had the easy job of driving all the way there and back !!!
Mid week and we cleared the offices of Mackay Timber Merchants in Liverpool who have been trading for over 150 years and are now operating from smaller premises. We had some fun moving two fireproof safes from 1st floor down the fire escape to the van. . . Lots of sweating and a bit of swearing later and they were on the van and off to auction along with numerous items of old office furniture. I did ponder with the idea of getting the lads to hold the safe on the fire escape while I took a picture but decided in the end to get it down to the floor first. . . . Health and Safety prevailed in the end 🙂
Sawfish and Swimming Pools W/C 16th July 2012
Posted Saturday 21 Jul 2012 14:26 PM
Monday saw Steve and Mark off down south dropping stuff in Royston,Herts before heading down to Rochester,Kent for the night. Got a great deal at Holiday Inn,Rochester for two inc breakfast for £79. 00 but forgot to tell them that the digs had a swimming pool. Steve was gutted as he hadn't packed his Speedos !!!
He had contemplated going for a swim in his undies at the hotel but thought better of it in the end !
Delivered in Rochester the following morning before heading back to Southport.
End of the week we cleared a property for a local firm of solicitors taking various items to Ellis and Sons Auctioneers amongst them two old sawfish (or carpenter fish) snouts that were over 100 years old and amazingly still with all the teeth.
Wouldn't want to meet one of these close up whilst swimming !!!!

A night out for 2 of us in Swanley, Kent on Monday ( not very interesting though!) as a result of a move from Lord St, Southport to Orpington, Kent. Luckily got another delivery in Orpington as well as drops in Northampton, Marlow,Bucks and Knutsford on the way home. Good trip, no traffic problems the only downside was the rain all the way down and the extortionate Low Emission Zone charge of £200 for entering outer London for a couple of hours. Why they come up with these schemes that hammer down on people trying to run a business . . . . . Must keep Boris Johnson in the manner to which he's become accustomed I suppose 🙁 Rest of week local then a move from Crosby to Runcorn to finish the week.
Storage Exodus W/C 18th June 2012

It is quite common to see a lot of our clients, who have had their goods held in storage over the winter months, finally complete on properties once the summer kicks in and this week saw a few more being delivered to their new homes. Finished the week with a full pre-pack and move to Maltby in South Yorkshire on what proved to be the driest day of the week. . . . Fortunately

Another busy week of local work seeing several clients moving out of our storage facility to their new properties including one to a flat on the 10th floor with the lift out of order !!!! Fortunately there was another in working order otherwise we would have all weighed in at about 5 stone each at the end of the week !! 🙂
Jubilee Week Madness !
Posted Wednesday 04 Jul 2012 15:23 PM
Despite the interruption of Jubille celebrations and bank holidays the month started off on a mad one !! Pre-packing and moving a client from Southport down to Leighton Buzzard with drops in Altrincham and Stow on the Wold en route our lads found themselves in Gloucestershire on Thursday evening when I received a frantic call from her distressed daughter who had been informed that some paperwork surrounding the sale had not been completed and the delivery to her mums new home could not take place !! How these things are allowed to happen so late in a completion is still a mystery to us and very upsetting for our clients. Many people are stressed enough at moving time as it is. Rather than have to bring everything back to Southport to storage then arrange re-delivery at a later date we set about trying to contact a firm near her new home who could accept the goods into storage the following day and deliver them locally when ready. Fortunately, even though it was now 7. 30pm and after numerous phone calls, we were able to contact Tom at WS Removals in Leighton Buzzard who was able to arrange for us to deliver to his storage facility the next day. We were very pleased to be able to save our client the extra expense of a second trip down and find a temporary solution to the problem for her.
